An uncharacteristically deserted Grey Street in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, with the Monument on which Charles, 2nd Earl Grey, stands in the dress of a Roman senator, suggesting a latter day Cato. The monument and limestone statue by sculptor Edward Hodges Baily (who had earlier created the statue of Nelson in London’s Trafalgar Square) was erected in 1838 to mark Earl Grey’s tenure as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834, during which he saw the Home Page and the Home Page through Parliament. He is the Earl Grey after whom the tea is named.

Spinners Find in Think and Speak

For each group of words, compose a sentence that uses all three. You can use any form of the word: for example, cat → cats, go → went, or quick → quickly, though neigh → neighbour is stretching it a bit.

This exercise uses words found in the accompanying puzzle.

1 Deer. Edge. Regal.

2 Angle. Deal. Greed.

3 Delay. Garden. Learn.

Variations: 1. include direct and indirect speech 2. include one or more of these words: although, because, despite, either/or, if, unless, until, when, whether, which, who 3. use negatives (not, isn’t, neither/nor, never, nobody etc.)
