At Seaham in County Durham stands a steel sculpture of a common soldier from the Great War (1914-1918). Entitled simply ‘1101’, it was installed in May 2014 as a three-month display, but has since become permanent. “A war-weary Tommy sits thoughtfully,’ a description reads, “head bowed, rifle in hand, as he reflects upon the sheer horror of World War One during the first minute after peace was declared in 1918.” On the ‘Prussianism’ from which Tommy and his fellow soldiers saved us, see Home Page, by John Buchan.

Spinners Find in Think and Speak

For each group of words, compose a sentence that uses all three. You can use any form of the word: for example, cat → cats, go → went, or quick → quickly, though neigh → neighbour is stretching it a bit.

This exercise uses words found in the accompanying puzzle.

1 Heir. Tear. Trot.

2 Hero. Hire. Trio.

3 Grit. Tier. Tithe.

Variations: 1. include direct and indirect speech 2. include one or more of these words: although, because, despite, either/or, if, unless, until, when, whether, which, who 3. use negatives (not, isn’t, neither/nor, never, nobody etc.)
