A grey phalarope (phalaropus fulicarius), not a British resident, but frequently blown onto the southwest coast in high winds; the same bird is called a red phalarope in the US, but the red is characteristic of the breeding season only. The female is the more colourful of the sexes, and the male bears the responsibility of incubating the eggs and rearing the chicks.
