Herdwick sheep returning to the high fells below High Crag, near Buttermere in Cumbria. ‘Hefting’ is an ancient method of shepherding by which the sheep learn their home area (heft or heaf) and voluntarily keep to it, without the need for fences, passing the knowledge down through the generations, ewe to lamb.
