The Falkirk Wheel is truly one of a kind, the only example in Britain or the world. It is a rotating boat-lift, that hoists boats from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal above it. It was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, and replaced a formidable series of eleven locks that took most of a day to pass through, leading to closure in the 1930s. A single lift takes just ten minutes.

Spinners Find in Think and Speak

For each group of words, compose a sentence that uses all three. You can use any form of the word: for example, cat → cats, go → went, or quick → quickly, though neigh → neighbour is stretching it a bit.

This exercise uses words found in the accompanying puzzle.

1 Rail. Tale. Twirl.

2 Heart. Heat. Their.

3 Earth. Throw. Tire.

Variations: 1. include direct and indirect speech 2. include one or more of these words: although, because, despite, either/or, if, unless, until, when, whether, which, who 3. use negatives (not, isn’t, neither/nor, never, nobody etc.)
