The Hay Inclined Plane between Ironbridge and Coalport in Shropshire. The pool at the bottom of the picture is fed by the River Severn. The railway tracks leading steeply up the hill are the Hay Inclined Plane, first used in 1792. Steam engines used ropes to raise or lower barges between the Severn and the Shropshire Canal at the top, a trip of 207 feet at a gradient of 1-in-4. Beyond the ridge, about half a mile along the canal, lies Blists Hill, one of the first centres of the Industrial Revolution. The machinery was capable of handling barges weighing 5 tons, and required only four men to work it. The plane was in use until 1894.

For each group of words, compose a sentence that uses all three. You can use any form of the word: for example, cat → cats, go → went, or quick → quickly, though neigh → neighbour is stretching it a bit.

This exercise uses words found in the accompanying puzzle.

1 Chair. Cyan. Hare.

2 Cancer. Racy. Rain.

3 Acne. Char. Earn.

Variations: 1. include direct and indirect speech 2. include one or more of these words: although, because, despite, either/or, if, unless, until, when, whether, which, who 3. use negatives (not, isn’t, neither/nor, never, nobody etc.)
