About this picture …

Dill (anethum graveolens). It was prescribed in the 9th century Anglo-Saxon herbal ‘Bald’s Leechbook’, possibly made as part of King Alfred the Great’s educational reforms, for a wide range of ailments, including headaches, jaundice, liver problems, and especially stomach upsets. The author made an effort to draw on classical Greek medicine as well as English lore. In 2015, a remedy from the Leechbook was put to laboratory test as a possible remedy against MRSA. See New Scientist (March 2015).

Where the bee sucks there lurk I:
In a cow-slip’s bed I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On a bat’s back do I fly
After sunset merrily,
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

Song 46 (Drop, drop slow tears)

Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625)

Performed by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, conducted by Stephen Cleobury.

1 Drop, drop, slow tears,
and bathe those beauteous feet,
which brought from heaven
the news and Prince of Peace.

2 Cease not, wet eyes,
his mercies to entreat;
to cry for vengeance
sin doth never cease.

3 In your deep floods
drown all my faults and fears;
nor let his eye
see sin, but through my tears.

Phineas Fletcher (1582-1650)
