The Parish Church of St Cuthbert in Bewcastle, Cumbria. The building dates back to the late 13th century, with substantial additions in the 18th century. However, the tall trunk of the stone cross to the right is of Anglo-Saxon origin, assigned to the late 7th or early 8th century. It is covered in runes and images, including Christ, St John the Baptist, St John the Evangelist (possibly), as well as animals and vines. It also plays host to the country’s oldest surviving sundial. The runes show that it was dedicated to the heir and other sons of King Oswiu (Oswy) of Northumbria (r. 642-670). St Cuthbert was Bishop of Lindisfarne on the east coast, and died in 687.
