These tiles were installed in Wellington Hospital, New Zealand, in 1912. They show characters from the nursery rhyme Hey! Diddle Diddle. Such rhymes often come in various forms; James Halliwell in The Nursery Rhymes of England (1886) recorded it thus:

Hey! diddle, diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laugh’d
To see the sport,
While the dish ran after the spoon.
