One of the lion sculptures at Harlaxton Manor in Lincolnshire, a few miles southwest of Grantham. Now a college of the University of Evansville, Indiana, USA, it was saved from demolition by Violet van der Elst (née Dodge), a working-class girl who invented the first brushless shaving cream and became extremely wealthy. However, she spent all but £16,000 of her fortune on campaigning against the death penalty, abolished a year before her death in 1966.
