Introduction
Rugby League is a form of the sport of Rugby Football that dominates in northern England, but is overshadowed in the south by more fashionable Rugby Union. Once the only professional form of the game, over the years Rugby League has became the faster, harder, and arguably more exciting code.
THE game of Rugby football developed at a Public school in the Warwickshire town of Rugby, early in the Victorian era. Soon it had spread across England, and competitions were organised by the Rugby Football Union, which insisted that players should be strictly amateur.
Teams in the busy manufacturing towns of northern England found it hard to recruit players with the leisure to play without pay, so in 1895 an independent Northern Rugby Football Union was established to allow professionalism, renamed the Northern Rugby Football League in 1922.
Over the years, the rules of League rugby have diverged from those of Union, creating a high-scoring sport that demands great speed, awareness and strength. Britain’s Super League is still dominated by teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire, but includes one team from France; worldwide, the game is popular in Australia and New Zealand, and the League organised rugby’s first World Cup (in any code) in 1954, a competition which now boasts teams from fourteen countries.
Précis
The sport of Rugby was divided into rival camps in 1895, when professional teams from the industrial north broke from the strictly amateur Rugby Union. These two forms of the game, Rugby Union and Rugby League, grew further apart into the separate codes with different rules played today in Britain and all over the world. (55 / 60 words)
