Shortly after the rise of Napoleon, pioneering scientist Sir Humphry Davy urged his colleagues not to support French Emperor’s bid for European domination, even if they thought it would mean extra funding for science. He declared that science was a more natural partner with industry than with government, and that a strong economy and harmonious society depended on it.
