James Parton (1822-1891) was born in Canterbury, England, but was taken to the USA when he was five. He became a schoolteacher in Philadelphia and New York, and finally settled in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He wrote several biographies, chiefly of statesmen and businessmen, and took a particular interest in notable women. In his day, Parton was one of America’s most popular biographers.
