Margaret Sprague Carhart (1877-1953) taught English at the Universities of Colorado and, from 1920, California. Her parents were both distinguished scholars. Margaret was a very popular teacher, who took it upon herself to discover and encourage potential in those who did not push themselves forward. Much of her time outside the classroom was spent in reading manuscripts and judging creative writing competitions. In 1921, she was awarded a PhD by Yale University for her work on Scottish author Joanna Baillie.
