Main Text

Clay Lane is a personal, non-commercial tribute to the educational vision of Norman Llewellyn Clay (1905–1991). It is provided as a ‘Self-Help Guide’ for independent adult learners (18+). It is not a formal school, a regulated tuition service, or a guaranteed path to academic qualification. It is intended to entertain, inform, and encourage people who value and want to practise Straightforward English. I look forward to working together in that spirit.

01 Reusing Content

A great deal of this site consists of material in the public domain. However, the exercises, the footnotes and other annotations, and articles under the byline of Clay Lane or its editor Nicholas Armitage, are all my own work: the spirit, the methods, and certain titles used are a tribute to NL Clay, but I have not reproduced his books or extensively republished their content. My original materials are for personal, non-commercial use only. Please do not repackage or repurpose them for commercial resale.

02 No Warranties

Although I take great care in preparing and presenting my materials, I can’t guarantee not to mistype, misremember, or simply be mistaken. I have no formal qualifications as a teacher, and I know very little about modern-day courses and examinations, so I cannot hazard any kind of a guess as to grades or standards. You use this site at your own risk and for your own creative interest: I am not responsible for the use to which my readers may put these materials.
