September 16 os

We mark certain days of the year with ‘On This Day’ posts, recalling events associated with them.

Our events are grouped under two calendars. The Gregorian ‘New Style’ (NS) is the worldwide calendar first issued at Rome in 1582. On that calendar, today is September 29. The Julian ‘Old Style’ (OS), also issued at Rome but in 46 BC, was used in Roman Britain and then in England from Anglo-Saxon times until 1752. It is still used today by roughly 100 million Orthodox Christians worldwide. On that calendar, today is September 16.

Blind Date

After two punishing years rising to the top of the East India Company’s armed forces in India, Robert Clive could not spare the time to go courting.

By the end of March 1752, Robert Clive was lonely and exhausted. He had almost single-handedly relieved the fortress at Arcot from a French siege, and then captured two French forts at the head of a band of five hundred raw recruits no other officer would agree to command. As he listened to his friend Edmund Maskelyne reading snatches of his letters from home, a resolution formed in his breast.

British Mandatory Palestine

After the Great War, the British Government did keep one of her many wartime promises to her allies.

In a letter dated November 2nd, 1917, towards the end of the Great War, Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour assured prominent banker Lord Rothschild that the British Government would do what it could to carve out a homeland for Jewish people in what was then part of the Ottoman Empire. The promise was kept, and this is how the Colonial Office List for 1946 summarised the formation of British Mandatory Palestine.

How St Euphemia Saved Christmas

The martyr St Euphemia played a vital role in preventing the message of Christmas from being watered down.

In 314, the Roman Empiror Costantine lifted all restrictions on Christianity, but intellectuals still held the philosophy of Plato in awe. Sometimes the Greek view of the Divine – remote, impersonal, unsullied by contact with Creation – tempted Christian clergy to back-peddle on the much more characterful God of Israel, who will dare all for love.
